Meeting Place:  We will meet at the Menetre Boat launch between 6:00-6:30 am and launch by 6:45 am.  We will fish until 3 pm.  You are welcome to follow the trip leader to this location; the departure time will be 4:00am from the Target parking lot at Louisiana & I-10.  Please call the trip leader by March 12th if you wish to follow.  If you choose to stay longer, please be sure to notify the trip leader that you will be staying longer and of your whereabouts.

Trip Description:  The Bogue Falaya River is a tributary of the Tchefuncte River.   It’s a great place to fish for many different species.  It is loaded with structure that attract Sac a-lait, bass, bream, and catfish.   From our launch location you will have the option to fish the Bogue Falaya River which runs North and South, or the Abita River which runs East and West.   Sac a-lait, bass and bream may be caught along the banks by targeting structure.   Catfish usually hold in the deeper holes.

There are shallow sandbars that you will come across the further North you travel.  There’s deeper water just past the sandbars and the structure in the area can hold sac a-lait up to 3lbs.  There have been bass caught in the 3 – 4lb range and plenty smaller.  Focus on drop-offs, creeks running into the river, blow downs, rocks, and ambush points.  Bream can be caught throughout the rivers, the larger bream can be caught just north of the launch site by targeting boat docks, sticks/trees, bulk heads, and current breaks.  Catfish will hold in the deeper areas, try fishing the outside of bends, steep drop-offs, and deep structure.  There is lots of water to cover.   Just be very careful of the boats if you travel South from the launch, this is the path that most boats take to their fishing location.  A depth finder will really come in handy for locating underwater structure, points, drop-offs, and bait.  Baitfish will hang around lay downs, be sure to keep an eye out -fish will be holding nearby.

Tackle/Bait To Bring:

Sac a-lait/Bream:  Light or ultra light spinning combos, 2 – 6 lb line, bobbers/floats, tube/hair jigs, 1/80 – 1/8oz jig heads, jigs with spinners, and live bait.

Bass:  Medium- Medium Heavy rods, spinning or bait casting reels,  10 – 14lb line, 1/4oz – 3/4oz weights, spinner baits, soft plastics, and hard baits.

Catfish:  Medium – Medium Heavy rods, spinning or bait casting reels, 12 – 20lb line, 1/2oz – 2oz weights, live or dead bait.

A push pole may come in handy for this trip.

There aren’t any bait shops near our launch site, so any angler choosing to fish with live/dead bait will need to bring it along.

What to Watch For:  Gnats, horse flies, or mosquitoes may be present, so bring a head net, spray, and/or long clothing.  This river always has a water flow, watch for objects in the water if drift fishing. Shallow areas- (for peddlers),  weather and temperature,  dress appropriately, always wear your PFD.  Be prepared to renew your membership if it is due and to resign your waiver.

Additional Notes:  Most, if not all of the Bogue Falaya (Northward) is a No Wake Zone. There are sandbars to the North.  If you are peddling you will need to keep an eye out for these areas or set your depth finder alarm.  There can be some boat traffic to the South and many of these boaters have never seen paddlers in the area.

The Abita River is a narrow winding river and boat traffic is limited so be very careful if you choose to fish the area.  Some type of anchor system and/or drift sock is highly recommended.  The  maximum paddling distance North is 4 ½ miles, East 2 ¼ miles, and South is unlimited because the Bogue Falaya meets with the Tchefuncte River which empties into Lake Ponchatrain.

How to Get There:

From I-10 in Lafayette: take I-10 toward Baton Rouge 56.3 miles. Merge onto I-12 via exit 159 toward Hammond 59.2 miles; take the LA-21 N exit toward Covington/Hospital.  Turn Left onto LA-21 (Tyler St) 2.3 miles.  Turn Right onto West 8th Ave 0.6 miles.  Turn Right onto South Jahncke Ave 0.3 miles.  Turn Left onto East 4th Ave.   The Boat launch is at the end of East 4th Ave.
